FINNISH INDEPENDENCE DAY CONCERT

With the support of the Embassy of Finland

4 December 2007.

Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory

It has been a long tradition to mark the Independence Day of Finland by bringing outstanding Finnish talents for the performance in Moscow. In 1999 a famous and oldest Finnish children’s choir Cantores Minores performed for the first time in Russia. In the following years we had the one of the most celebrated Finnish musicians in the world today - baritone Jorma Hynninen, outstanding Finnish conductors Jorma Panula and Heikki Seppanen, as well as the Symphonic choir of Turku.

This year concert is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of independence of Finland. Simultaneously, we commemorate the 50'" anniversary of the death of Finnish most distinguished composer, Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). The Moscow Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Vladimir ZIVA will perform Jean Sibelius’ pieces Cantique and Devotion op. 77 and Symphony Nо 5 Е flat op. 82. MSO will perform also Antonin Dvorak’ Concert for cello and orchestra op. 104.

Martti RousiThe world famous Finnish cellist MARTTI ROUSI will be the soloist at the anniversary concert. Martti Rousi (born 1960) has been professor of cello music at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki since 1998. He has won several prizes in Finland, and also got a silver medal at the Tchaikovsky contest in 1986. Martti Rousi’s instrument was built by Carlo Giuseppe Testore in 1698.

Founded in 1989, the MOSCOW SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is one of the leading orchestras in the capital today and is the first independent orchestra in Russia established with private resources and free of state support. Since 1996 under the general sponsorship of “Nestle” the MSO performs an annual series of concerts in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. The professionalism and outstanding repertoire of the MSO has established the orchestra in Moscow’s musical sphere and built a devoted and appreciative audience.
